It’s up to you.
Retiring from a long and successful career is one of life’s Top 10 most stressful transitions. The things that make it stressful are well-known and revolve around what’s lost in leaving work behind. Knowing what you will miss most about working is the first step in navigating a smooth landing.
This interactive presentation examines the 10 common losses experienced after a career exit, invites the audience to reflect on which ones are likely to impact them the most, and then begin to create personal mitigation strategies.
A Future State of Mind:
Why it’s hard to envision the rest of your life & how to get better at it.
It’s sort of miraculous that we can contemplate the future. Unfortunately, we’re not equally able to act today for the benefit of our future selves. Standing in the way is our hunter gatherer brain, concerned mostly with survival or pleasure in the moment. It’s hard to get past that when the future is largely a black hole that we can’t fully relate to.
But what if thinking about the future is an ability you can develop? What if you can create a relationship with your future self? What if together those things could help you act today for the benefit of your future self?
This applies in all kinds of situations including, of course, developing a compelling vision of a desired life in retirement and making it happen.
This fun, interactive session offers practical, easily implemented tips to get better at connecting with a creative future state of mind.
Happy as a Clam:
Finding Happiness by Pursuing Purpose
Pursuing happiness is a mug’s game. It’s always one step ahead, just around the corner. You think you’ve nailed it and then it’s floated away, coyly beckoning just beyond your grasp.
The pursuit of happiness can quickly turn into the pursuit of one hedonistic pleasure after another, particularly if you have the resources to support it. However, the truth of the matter is that happiness derived hedonistically is fleeting and the experiences that provide it quickly feel ordinary, boring and ultimately futile. Yikes!
The pursuit of purpose on the other hand, rooted as it is at the core of who you are, is deeply and enduringly fulfilling. Happiness is its wonderful by-product.
But what if your sense of purpose has been tied to your work? How do you find it when work is left behind? Happy as a Clam offers strategies for getting started including, how to find purpose in your favourite hedonistic pursuits.
